February 23 is the Day of the Defender of the Fatherland.
[Russ. День защитника Отечества]. It is an official public holiday throughout Russia. Officially, as the name suggests, the holiday celebrates people who are serving or were serving in the Russian Armed Forces. However, it is generally practiced that all male citizens, from baby boys to old men, receive congratulations and presents on this day. It is also called Men's Day.
The holiday is celebrated with parades and processions in honor of veterans. Women give small gifts to the Russian men, especially husbands (or boyfriends), fathers and sons, male co-workers. Women often give presents and postcards to their male relatives, including those who never served in the military.
